STUDIO: CIRCUS LEEDS LOGO DEVELOPMENT

After reviewing my current ideas I decided to leave my laptop and approach the brief from a more analogue perspective. I did this by going to the letterpress room and having a look at some of the typefaces used in there. This would perhaps persuade me to use some more traditional typefaces within my design.

Some of the main typefaces within the letterpress room that I liked were 'univers' and 'gotham'. These two typefaces were both very similar, big and bold sans serif typefaces with very flat bodies. I then looked inside the random lettering box which was full of unrecognisable typeface and mixed up fonts. I selected some taller typefaces from this to clash against the flatter 'univers' or 'gotham' typeface.

After this, I printed some of the letters I had selected through the letterpress machine to see how they paired with each other and I ended up liking what I saw physically a lot more then what I had previously made digitally. I took this knowledge and began to attempt a digital replica of my prints.

After some research I found out that the typeface 'univers' had a big license agreement attached to it and was not free to use which was against a part of the brief. I needed to use an all free typeface. I then managed to find 'gotham' online which luckily was free and would use this as a part of my logo.

After reviewing the more abstract typefaces that I printed from the random font box, I wanted to find one that would match but obviously I had no idea what these ones were called. After further research into typography relating to letterpress, I found a digitally exclusive typeface that was designed digitally but fully inspired by letterpress techniques. It won an award in 2012 for best designed typeface of the year and has been reworked from original tall letterpress fonts. I will be using this as the second part of my logo.
