STUDIO: PUNK ROCK MBA PODCAST RESEARCH

I listed to the Punk Rock MBA podcast to get some further information on the genre and possibly some sub genres of Hardcore. The Punk Rock MBA is a podcast series that talks about Hardcore punk history, rates bands, genres and goes really in depth into certain bands and genres and discusses why they failed or succeeded. It is ran by a guy called Finn McKenty who grew up as a part of the  Hardcore culture. He made zines, posters and flyers back in the 80's and 90's for these bands advertising them and documenting their shows. He now works for a big advertising agency as a Graphic Designer.

Podcast no.1: BAND LOGO TIER LIST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JogKAw4zasU

Top tier logotype. Anyone within the Hardcore scene would recognise this logo and font from a mile away. Incredibly unique for the time, prints well and is legible. Represents the genre perfectly. (Old school west coast hardcore)

How to make a good band logo: Needs to represent the bands aesthetic, should reproduce well in all situations (albums, stickers, merchandise, online etc.)

Top tier emblems. Must be clear and translate the bands aesthetic simply but this time through illustration or imagery.

Ramones logo is incredibly clear and literal and uses smart contextual references to the American presidential seal due to a lot of punk acts being politically motivated.

Incredibly simple and reproducible. Can hold detail really well and by incredibly simplistic at the same time.

The Crass logo uses a clever use of typography and imagery. Made to be used as a stencil which is why so many of their fans spray painted the logo on the back of their jackets. This lends to the cultural reference of DIY within hardcore and punk. This really pushes the logo firther.

Misfits logo is really recognisable and reproducible. It has sold millions of dollars of merchandise since the band formed and has been bought by street wear brands and sold on many times. It is actually stolen from the front cover of an old horror comic book and took no skill to create at all, just a good eye. Captures the bands horror aesthetic perfectly as they paint their faces similarly to this on stage.

The Descendants logo is incredibly unique for the genre and reproduces extremely well due to being just a few lines. Reflects straight edge punk really well due to it being more of a serious movement that represents cleanliness and sobriety.

The D.R.I. logo once again represents the culture perfectly as their logo showcases a character moshing in the style of a Hardcore fan. A recognisable body motion to fans of the genre.
